The Community Food Basket is a ministry serving anyone needing food assistance in northern Riley County (everything west of Manhattan city limits). Begun over 20 years ago, it continues to be run by a coalition of 10 area churches and has a goal of providing 3 meals per day/3 days a week. Food is distributed based on family size. Holiday food baskets are provided at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter (note the food need list). It also offers the annual Adopt-A-Family program. A family can sign up to receive gifts at Christmas and is matched with an anonymous donor group who provides gifts for the children in the family.
Food Needs for the Community Food Basket: whole kernel corn, green beans, fruit cocktail, chili beans, baked beans, boxed mashed potatoes, stuffing, noodles, cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, macaroni-n-cheese, brownie mix, pie filling, cranberry sauce, canned yams, hamburger helper, holiday crackers, mixed nuts, and individual packets of cocoa.
Donations can be left in the green tub under the coat rack. You can also drop off donations at the Community Food Basket (located off the alley behind the Riley City Library) on Saturday mornings between 10-12, or at the Riley City Office and The Store in Leonardville during operating hours.
